修飾語の訳し方(上級読解編）

英語には名詞あるいは名詞節・句を利用した特有の表現があります、前後関係からどのことばを修飾していて、必要に応じて動詞を補って訳す必要があります。

a response of the mind of man　人間の精神（が示す）反応
a response of the mind to its environment　精神が環境に対して示す反応

A baby is like a explorer in a new world, full of wonder and surprise at the novelty of everyghing.
赤ん坊は、新しい世界であらゆる珍しいものに驚嘆の気持ちでいっぱいになっている探検家に似ている。

For the first time I found something to do which involved my whole nature.
私は、初めてを私という人間のすべてをあげてぶつからなければならない仕事を見つけた。
このinvolveやnatureの訳し方は難しい。
nature 無冠詞　自然、自然界、物質界（Natureと大文字になる場合が多い）

The Japanese are, like the Americans, the kind of people who want to know what you think of them.

日本人もアメリカ人同様に、他国の人がどのように自国民をみているかを知りたがる国民である。　　the kind of ~（people）　種類の~であると訳すこと。

　注：　that があるのでwhichの先行詞はforeheadだけに限定される。

anotherとはここでは「もうひとつ」という意味ではなく、「とは違う」の意味。

The awakening of women began with the visit to America of Frances Wright, a Scotswoman of advanced views. Her appearance before audiences to deliver lectures on women's rights shocked the public. In 1848, a women's rights convention, the first in the history of the world, was held at Seneca Falls, New York.
